Much like the Ghostbusters, Beetlejuice and Toxie, the Killer Tomatoes were a franchise I first knew from their animated series before I found out it was based on a movie. The television executives of the late '80s and early '90s had no qualms with making cartoons based on any movie at all, which kind of makes me sad that I didn't also grow up with animated versions of Army Of Darkness, Re-Animator and Basket Case.
The movie Attack Of The Killer Tomatoes! is an off-the-wall comedy along the lines of those made by Monty Python, Mel Brooks or the Zucker brothers. It is set up as a parody of the giant monster movies of the '50s, but the plot only exists as a wall for an endless string of gags to be hung upon. Tomatoes begin attacking and eating people, and the government must figure out what to do. Unlike what's seen on the cover, the tomatoes never grow eyes and fangs. Most of the attacks in the movies consist of people getting tomatoes thrown at them from offscreen.
The movie does have some stretches of weak jokes in it, but it also has a good number of great lines throughout it. Overall, I enjoyed it. It's probably a fun movie for a party.
